Finding The UX Firm That Fits (Guest Post By Clutch.co)

Clutch is a startup in Washington, DC that connects small and medium businesses with the agencies and software solutions that can help them accomplish their business goals. Given the breadth of agencies, providers, and services available in today’s marketplace, it’s a challenging process for buyers to find the perfect fit.

That’s where Clutch comes in.

Our unique methodology combines verified client testimonials with our own research to curate directories of the leading companies in each of the categories we cover. We look at how present and engaged agencies are within their market, the size and outcomes of previous projects, how active and established they are on social media channels, and their focus on relevant services. All of that, in addition to over-the-phone interviews with individual clients creates what we consider to be the most holistic and helpful information available today. Needless to say, it’s not easy to make it onto our Leaders Matrix.

Over the past two months I have been building our user experience agencies directory, which is one of the more selective sub-categories within the larger “digital agencies” umbrella. After speaking with over fifty clients and working with a collection of UX agencies, there are a few key takeaways worth sharing:

Finding the perfect partnership is as much a responsibility of the buyer as it is the seller The most successful partnerships are a result of great communication at the outset. The onus is on the client to communicate their needs and expectations, and on the agency to communicate their expertise. A truly talented agency is able to work with clients to determine what is best for them when they may not know themselves.

Well-organized agencies have higher rates of satisfaction – Though most agencies are initially hired for other reasons (size, previous work, price point), the ones that also have strong project management and communication skills receive the highest praise. Sticking to timelines, keeping the client on track, and being able to adjust the schedule when necessary are what differentiates great agencies from true partners.

Each client is unique – Everybody wants to feel special. Companies that are savvy enough to invest in user experience design want to differentiate themselves and their brand. A combination of the first two takeaways will likely lead to a successful relationship, but creativity is a big differentiator. UX agencies that are able to get an intimate understanding of their client’s business needs and their industry are able to deliver unique, creative designs that embody what the client is hoping to achieve.

Other aspects that are characteristic of successful engagements are: interaction with the CEO and company leadership, open communication about the breakdown of the budget, similar client and agency working styles (How often do they want to communicate? Do they want to only talk to the project manager or do they want access to the designers? What level of engagement is expected from them?), and a smooth contracting process.
