As part of athenahealth’s efforts to showcase the advantages of its network-enabled healthcare IT service over stand-alone software, the company studied the over 87,000 healthcare providers on athena to better understand what made the best performers perform best. But data is only part of the story, making it understandable and useful for prospective customers was the heart of altr’s design challenge.

Working with a cross-functional team of product designers, marketers, sales consultants, and data analysts at athena, we concepted a simple practice assessment tool for use at conferences and ultimately, on site at athenhealth.com.
The practice assessment application, first launched for MGMA and then further optimized for HiMMS, the year’s preeminent Health IT event, helped the company start and advance sales conversations. The tool provided prospective customers with a benchmark on how they perform relative to other practices, while sharing proven best practices to increase clinical and financial productivity, reduce cost, and encourage growth.
